A holding company lets go to grow
Problem:
Holding Co. diversified into several non-related businesses without achieving the profitability targets.

Holding Co., a large Latin American group, owns many businesses in fast moving goods, packaging and real estate development, among others.

The Board of Investors of Holding Co. had set a minimum return for all the companies in the portfolio. Many of them fell below the goal.

The Bain team was charged with:

  • finding a new business opportunity that could eventually replace the reliable cash generators ("cash cows")
  • defining strategies for the smaller businesses ("tigers") to either achieve their value creation objectives or be divested
  • clarifying the strategic and operational role of the center to achieve overall growth
